Victorian Walnut Turned Canterbury.

A charming and rare piece.

This is a marvellous example of an antique Walnut beautifully inlaid Canterbury made around C1870. The Canterbury was first introduced in the late 18th Century Georgian period and got its name from the first commissioned piece by the Archbishop of Canterbury for storing sheet music. The Canterbury was popular throughout the 19th Century Victorian and later Edwardian periods in Britain as an occasional piece of furniture that could be used in the living room.

This superb Canterbury is completely original and has its original polish throughout complete with its lovely lightly faded original colour showing patina and character. This antique Canterbury is very decorative having Boxwood and Kingwood strung inlays to the top rim and drawer front complete with 4 turned finals to each corner and 14 ornately turned division supports. It has three divided compartments which are perfect for magazines, books and newspapers. The base contains a high quality slim finely dovetail constructed Mahogany lined drawer with turned knobs to front which works smoothly and is clean inside. The drawer could provide the perfect storage solution for remote controls. The whole piece stands on finely turned legs with its original working Brass castors on typical early Victorian white porcelain wheels, making this item easily movable.

This fine piece of antique furniture would make an elegant addition to any home as it is small and decorative but also provides very useful storage.

We have sympathetically restored this item maintaining original patina by just carefully cleaning and waxing this item to enhance the French polished surface and preserve it for many years to come.

This stool is in amazing condition for its age as shown by the photographs however being an antique item of this age there are blemishes and scuffs here and there which we feel adds to its originality and heritage.
