Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the mid-to-late nineteenth century, French decorative arts heavily featured Rococo Revival and Second Empire styling. These designs frequently incorporated classical motifs such as putti, cherubs, acanthus leaves, and scrolls, often cast in bronze with rich gilt or ormolu finishes.

High-quality nineteenth-century candelabra were typically constructed using cast bronze or brass, which was subsequently chased and gilded using mercury gilding or electroplating. Bases were often crafted from carved white Carrara or black Belgian marble to provide stability and visual contrast.

Authentic period pieces display hand-chased surface details, precise metal casting seams, and original threaded iron rods securing the internal structure. Original gilding often shows subtle wear on raised surfaces, while the marble bases typically exhibit micro-chipping or age-appropriate patination around the edges.

A pair of antique candelabra can be styled symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, dining table sideboard, or entry console. Pairing ornate gilt metalwork with streamlined modern furniture or clean backdrop colours creates an engaging visual balance between historical detail and contemporary minimalism.

Dust gilt metalwork regularly with a soft, dry natural-bristle brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or abrasive polishes that can strip delicate gilding. Marble components should be wiped using a slightly damp cloth with mild pH-neutral soap, avoiding acidic cleaning agents.
