A Fine Quality Late 19th Century Longcase Mahogany Domestic Regulator Timepiece

1900 - 1920
Description

A good quality late 19th century mahogany longcase DOMESTIC REGULATOR. The 8-day timepiece movement features original 'deadbeat escapement', 'maintaining power' and is sold in perfect working condition, with key.

The plain mahogany case features a glazed front panel door behind which can be seen the highly polished brass weight and the wooden pundulum with large polished brass adjustable bob. The hood has a cast black metal gallery pediment, made of simplified fleur-de-lys.  The engraved silvered dial with subsidiary seconds dial has both Roman and Arabic numbering, black metal 'spade' hands and is signed above the six by the maker Emanuel Haer, who was recorded as trading from High Street, Winchester c.1900. (Ref: Brian Loomes, "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World - 21st Century Edition" p.355).

Dimensions:  Height: 74 inches. Width: 17 inches. Depth: 10.5 inches. (188 x 43 x 26 cm)

Date: c.1900

Regulator Clocks - The Regulator clock was developed due to the need for an extremely accurate standard timekeeper by which other clocks could be set. Regulators were used in Observatories, large country houses, clock workshops and retailers premises. Refinements to the movements included maintaining power, a spring device which keeps the clock going whilst winding, jewelled movements, deadbeat escapement and sophisticated compensated pendulums.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
