Description

A particularly good quality and original late 18th century London-made mahogany BRACKET CLOCK of compact size and in full working order. The case is typical of the period with an inverted ‘bell’ top surmounted by a cast brass handle which is surrounded by four cast ‘urn’ finials, whilst ormolu “caryatid” embellishments to the canted corners flank the front door which features cast spandrels and a brass inner frame to the glazing. It is supported on ogee bracket feet with further ormolu decoration to the base.

The eight-day movement strikes hours and (unusually) half-hours on a bell, with pull-cord to activate the repeat function. The backplate is beautifully engraved whilst the movement itself retains its original anchor escapement. The good dial with its engraved and silvered chapter-ring, features “Strike/Silent” control in the arch; engraved & silvered date aperture above “VI” and the engraved maker’s signature below “XII” for “Michael W. Griffith of London”. Original ornate hands and fine cast spandrels.

This good George III Bracket Clock is not large: 18ins high with handle down; 10.5ins wide and maximum 7ins deep front-to-back. (45.5 x 26.5 x 18cms). It is in excellent condition, having been professionally cleaned; it is in perfect working order and is guaranteed for at least two years. Circa 1785-1790.
