Antique Solid Silver Victorian Salt Cellars in Teniers Style - Daniel & Charles Houle 1878

19th century
Description

We are delighted to offer this wonderful pair of Victorian solid silver salts made by Daniel & Charles Houle in London, 1878.

The pair is wonderfully modelled in an intricate 'Teniers' style: David Teniers was a Flemish painter of the Baroque period with some of his main works featuring a tavern drinking scene. Such scenes were stylistically depicted and replicated on silver as seen with this fine pair of salts.

The exterior of the cellars is profusely decorated with hand chased figures, fine stippling and intricate engravings in the background. The interiors of the salts are gilded which provides a nice contrast as well as protection for the silver (from tarnishing).

Whilst very collectable in their own right for lovers of decorative silverware or painting-related wares, these items may also be practically used in the modern-day whether be it for salt, pepper or condiments of your choice such as mustard.

A full set of English hallmarks (makers mark slightly worn) are present on the base of both salts with matching marks for each piece.

*All images with other items are for display purposes only, this listing is for the pair of salts only.
