Antique Solid Silver Wine/whisky Decanter Label With Bacchus & Vine Motifs - Taylor & Perry 1840

£225    $285    €272
We are delighted to offer this fine-quality Victorian solid silver label made by Taylor & Perry of Birmingham in 1840. Being made by Perry, whose works of finer objects tend to be of superior quality, this label is no exception.

The label is intricately embellished with Rococo-revival motifs and classical references to Bacchus and vine leaves. Despite its small size, each part has been highly decorated edge-to-edge with scalloped shell edges, and even each grape is distinct and exceptionally crisp considering its age.

Such labels were often made for various wines that were in style (of the period) and as wine would be poured into glass decanters, it would be difficult to differentiate one another. As such, these decanter labels (or initially referred to as tickets) would be engraved with the matching drink (e.g. Sherry, Port, Madeira) and placed on the necks of the decanter. Evidently, in this case, this label was engraved by the owner/commissioner for whisky and as such would be an ideal addition or gift to whisky lovers.

The label''s wonderful artistic and exemplary quality of how even such a small item of silverware can be so distinguishing makes for a great little piece of silver to add to one''s collection, and display whilst also being practical in the modern day should you keep your drinks in a separate glass decanter.

The reverse side is marked with full English hallmarks.
