Michele FALANGA (1867-1942) American/Italian
Reflections
A fabulous painting of a young woman at her toilette bathed in sunlight. The painting has a remarkable luminous quality which is a characteristic of Falanga’s work. Dating to the late nineteenth century and indistinctly signed.
*Michele Falanga was born in Naples, Italy on July 5, 1867. He studied with Michele Tedesco, followed by the Istituto di Belle Arti in Naples with Stanislao Lista, Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi.
In 1901 Falanga emigrated on aboard the S.S. Trojan Prince, bound for the United States; In 1915 Falanga was recorded as a self-employed artist with a room at 335 Broadway in Lower Manhattan. From the mid- to late teens Falanga''s paintings could be purchased at the Abraham and Strauss department store in Brooklyn.
In 1927 Falanga became a United States citizen and in the following year he exhibited in a group show of Italian sculpture and paintings at the Bowery Savings Bank, in Manhattan’
...s Little Italy neighborhood. The New York Sun praised his paintings.

Condition
In fair condition. The canvas is brittle and there are several areas of patching with associated overpainting, see image. The frame is time worn and is distorted when viewed from the side elevation. Nevertheless, a very decorative and appealing painting.
