Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated this piece to the 1890s.

The back, in plain-weave technique, is exciting with its wide horizontal bands of 'zig-zags' which, I was told by an elderly nomadic woman during my time with the nomads in the 1970s, represented migrating birds.

At one time this bag would have had a bridge leading to another bag of the same, but as is often the case, these saddle-bags were cut up by unscrupulous dealers who saw the prospect of making more money from individual bags! Nevertheless, this bag is unique and very collectable.
