Antique Half Saddle-bag, Shahsevan Tribes of Bijar, North-west Persia.

19th century
Description

This rare and highly unusual, knotted-pile, half saddle-bag was made by Shahsevan tribes in the Bijar region of north-west Persia during the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

The beautiful natural colour in reds, blues and green dominate the unusual overall 'shrub' pattern on an ivory background with nuances of golden-yellow intermixed.

The back, in plain-weave technique, is exciting with its wide horizontal bands of 'zig-zags' which, I was told by an elderly nomadic woman during my time with the nomads in the 1970s, represented migrating birds.

At one time this bag would have had a bridge leading to another bag of the same, but as is often the case, these saddle-bags were cut up by unscrupulous dealers who saw the prospect of making more money from individual bags! Nevertheless, this bag is unique and very collectable.

Size: 66cm x 76cm (2' 2" x 2' 6").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
