Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire mantel clocks originated in the early 19th century, characterised by neoclassical themes, military symbolism, classical mythology, and elaborate figural bronzes. They feature high-quality mechanical movements housed within ormolu and patinated bronze structures designed to serve as focal decorative pieces.

These timepieces typically utilise fire-gilded bronze, known as ormolu, combined with dark patinated bronze to create striking visual contrast. Clock faces were frequently crafted from chased gilt brass or enamel, with movements housed in cast metal cases.

Authentic period examples generally display mercury-gilded surfaces with fine chasing detail, heavy cast bronze components, and mechanical pendulum movements. Clock dials from this era often feature Roman numerals, steel Breguet-style hands, and dual winding key holes for timekeeping and striking mechanisms.

Place the clock centrally on a stone or timber mantelpiece, a hallway console, or a library sideboard to create a focal point. Modern interiors benefit from pairing such detailed metalwork with clean lines, dark walls, or minimalist architectural backdrop elements.

Dust gilt bronze lightly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush to prevent abrasive scratching. Avoid chemical cleaners or liquids, which can dissolve the original gilded patina, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced by a professional horologist every few years.
