Royal Worcester Candle Extinguisher "Mandarin" (Shape 2568) Dated 1920

Description

Royal Worcester Candle 'Extinguisher' (snuffer) in the form of a "Mandarin" (shape 2568) in yellow/red/black/blue with a (puce) date stamp for 1920.

In perfect condition, no chips, cracks or signs of repair.

The Mandarin - A candle extinguisher - was first introduced in 1914 and is modelled as a portly Oriental Potentate holding a circular fan. Fully coloured usually (as in this case) in yellow and red, his black and pale blue hat having a red pompom. The fan is pale blue. The Mandarin is recorded as being sold for 2s.6d in 1927. It was withdrawn by 1940. It was re-issued in 1977. The modeller is unknown, but Daisy Rea remembers this model being designed by Mr Sharp who looked after the museum at the time.
