Daphne Du Maurier Rebecca Art Nouveau Settee Sofa C1920

Description

This is an amazing antique Art Nouveau sofa with bespoke fabrics created by the exciting new designer Alice Scarlett.

It has been fully restored and professionally reupholstered in bespoke cotton bonito narrative fabric depicting the characters from famous novels 'Rebecca' and 'The Kings General' by Daphne Du Maurier.

The designer was kindly granted access by Lord Richard Rashleigh to the historic Menabilly House and former residence of Daphne Du Maurier, situated just outside Fowey

Each element of the scenic design was individually hand-painted in watercolour, taking inspiration from the Cornish flora and fauna surrounding her former home.

At the top of the cliff face sits Manderlay House, with the sinister Mrs Danvers guarding the entrance. The grounds of the house fall away into the cliff face and below to the raging seas and rocks.

Across the cove sits the boat house being investigated by the new Mrs De Winter.

Out in the bay floats the storm wrecked yacht the Je Reviens (“I will return”), haunted by the ghost of Rebecca.

The fabric has been designed in such away that the waves on the back continue down through onto the main seat, followed by the foliage into one of the padded arms. It comes with a pair of matching feather bolster cushions.

On the back is a secret depiction of one of Daphne Du Maurier's lesser known novels 'The Kings General'. In one scene from the book the characters make a sinister discovery of a skeleton concealed inside a bricked up wall of a hidden room. In the book the skeleton remained a hidden secret, on this sofa the image has been added to the back where it is also a hidden secret.

The frame has been painted in Farrow and Ball eggshell with original porcelain casters.

This is a bespoke one-off piece that would appeal to any fan of Daphne Du Maurier's works.

We also have an Edwardian three fold screen depiciting the novel The Birds, they would make an incredible talking point!
