Antique 'Tacheh' (Wheat-sack), Luri - Bakhtiari Tribes, the Chahar Mahal, Western Persia.

1900 - 1920
Description

Published in Parviz Tanavoli and Herbert Bieler's 1994 ground-breaking book 'Tasheh' on pages 80/81, this is a very rare wheat-sack made circa 1920s by Luri - Bakhtiari tribes in western Persia.

All 'tachehs' have a knotted-pile centre-piece on a plain-weave ground. However, the difference with this tacheh is the shape of the knotted-pile centre-piece which appears more curvilinear at the top whereas all other tachehs are rectangular. The depiction of a large bird which, looking closely, is like a turkey or even a vulture, and alongside it, a stylised peacock, is also unusual.

Tachehs or wheat-sacks, as the name implies, were made for transporting wheat and most today have been opened up to show the full extent of the weaving. As wall-hangings, they look amazing - works of woven art!

Size: 92cm x 60cm (3' x 2').
