Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In the late 18th and 19th centuries, a breakfast table was a versatile dining piece designed with a central pedestal stem and often a tilt-top mechanism. Despite the name, these tables were utilised for informal meals, tea, and everyday family gatherings in townhouses and country estates.

Solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers were favoured for their rich colour and stability, alongside oak or pine for secondary framing. Pedestals were crafted with carved legs terminating in brass castors or paw feet.

Look for hand-carved pedestal details, original brass tilt-latch mechanisms beneath the top, and hand-cut joinery. Authentic period examples feature natural surface patination and flame mahogany veneers with distinct grain variations.

Pair the table with modern upholstered chairs or mid-century seating to create a balanced, eclectic contrast. Positioning it in a bay window, breakfast room, or formal dining space allows the rich timber tones to ground the rooms scheme.

Dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Protect the surface finish from direct sunlight, hot items, and liquid spills using placemats and trivets.
