Rare Royal Worcester Porcelain Figure - Beefeater (Model No: 1362), by James Hadley. Dated 1892

19th century
Description

A rare Royal Worcester porcelain figurine (model No: 1362) which depicts a "Beefeater" Guard to the Tower of London, complete with his lance. Modelled by the famous James Hadley, the model was first produced in 1889. This fine example is signed to the back and date stamped for 1892.

James Hadley (1837-1903) was an English potter and artist and by 1870 had become the principal modeller at the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company. Until 1895 his work was produced almost exclusively by Royal Worcester, he later set up his own factory. Described by John Sandon as 'probably the finest English modeller of all time'. Able to work in any form of style required, he is best known for his decorative figures, made in the 1870's and 1880's, when taste was shifting towards coloured models from the previous fashion for plain white (Parian Ware).

Condition: In very good sound condition, some wear to gilding around the ruff (collar), but little else considering age. Colours still bright. No chips, cracks or restoration scars. A fine example.

Height: 9.75 inches (25 cm)

Date coded:  1892
