Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval dressing mirror is a full-length floor-standing mirror set within a dual-upright frame that enables the glass to tilt back and forth. The term originates from the French word for horse, referencing the four-legged frame structure that supports the swivel mechanism.

Traditional cheval mirrors from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were primarily constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. The frames feature silvered glass mirrors, brass adjustment thumbscrews or pins, and turned wood uprights supported by splayed legs with brass castors.

Authentic period cheval mirrors exhibit hand-cut joinery along the timber frame, hand-turned finials, and original brass hardware like castors and tilt screws. Look for natural age-related oxidisation or foxing on the mirror plate alongside smooth wear on the wooden feet from movement.

Place a mahogany cheval mirror in the corner of a bedroom, dressing room, or spacious hallway to reflect natural light and create visual depth. Pairing rich mahogany timber with neutral walls, wool textiles, or minimalist modern furniture highlights the architectural silhouette of the frame.

Dust the mahogany frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, applying beeswax sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish. Clean the glass with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the glass to protect the wooden frame and silvering.
