Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French ormolu mantel clocks combine cast bronze cases coated in gold leaf or mercury gilding with decorative soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain panels. Popularised in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these clocks frequently featured classical revival architectural forms, hand-painted scenes, and precision mechanical movements.

The primary structure consists of gilt bronze, known as ormolu, which houses a brass mechanical clock movement. The decorative plaques and dial surrounds are crafted from painted porcelain, often featuring celestial blue or pink grounds with painted putti, floral motifs, and enamel dials.

Authentic period clocks feature heavy cast bronze with hand-chased surface details, distinct maker stamps or medals impressed on the rear movement plate, and hand-painted porcelain panels showing micro-craquelure or subtle hand brushwork under magnification.

Position the clock as a central focal point on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, a formal sideboard, or a dark wood console table. Pair it with symmetrical decorative accents such as brass candlesticks or minimalist modern art to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and clean lines.

Dust the exterior regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent particulate build-up in chased details. Never apply liquid metal polishes or harsh chemical cleaners to gilt bronze, as this strips the original gilding; internal mechanical movements should be serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
