A Good 19th Century Coromandel-wood Writing Box

19th century
Description

A good coromandel-wood WRITING BOX with stylishly decorated lid, utilising mother-of-pearl, abalone and fine brass inlays.

The box opens to reveal its blue baize writing surface. There is an unusual segmented stationery section to the rear, in front of which are two inkwells, a pen tray and two lidded stamp compartments. The topmost writing surface opens to reveal storage space under, with a secret panel which, when the discreet spring release is triggered, reveals two hidden drawers. The lower writing surface opens, by means of a brass slide-closer, to reveal further storage space. Sold with working key.

The upper surface of the lid is beautifully decorated with intricate brass stringing, leaves and flowers, abalone shell and a mother-of-pearl including a central cartouche made of mother-of-pearl, which bears the initials "WJ" (possibly "WG") and the date 1865. The front of the box also features a decorative key escutcheon, also in finely inlaid brasswork with mother-of-pearl acanthus leaves and floral garlands.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
