The box opens to reveal its blue baize writing surface.
The topmost writing surface opens to reveal storage space under, with a secret panel which, when the discreet spring release is triggered, reveals two hidden drawers. The lower writing surface opens, by means of a brass slide-closer, to reveal further storage space. Sold with working key.
The upper surface of the lid is beautifully decorated with intricate brass stringing, leaves and flowers, abalone shell and a mother-of-pearl including a central cartouche made of mother-of-pearl, which bears the initials "WJ" (possibly "WG") and the date 1865. The front of the box also features a decorative key escutcheon, also in finely inlaid brasswork with mother-of-pearl acanthus leaves and floral garlands.
