A fantastic large C19th Athénienne, the pierced gilt bronze rim with removable liner above burnished bronze sphinxes and tapering monopodiums with enchased gilt bronze collars, supported on a triform marble plinth. Excellent quality and patina. Useful as planter, wine cooler, or with the addition of a marble top as a table. Circa 1880.

An Athenienne is a tripartite classical stand derived from ancient Greco-Roman incense burners and altars. Popularised during the French Empire and Neoclassical periods, these stands were utilized as decorative pedestals, basins, or plant holders.

19th-century Atheniennes were predominantly constructed from cast bronze, brass mounts, and heavy marble or porphyry plinths. The metal elements were often detailed with dark patination or gilt finishes.
