Lilian Stannard 1877-1944 came from a well known family of Bedfordshire artists.She was the daughter of Henry Stannard and sister of Henry John Sylvester Stannard.Lilian became a celebrated painter of English gardens and her work was widely known through reproductions.She had several exhibitions at Arthur Ackermanns between 1914 and 1938 and and showed at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.Viewing her exhibition of 1896 at the Mendoza Gallery the art critic of The Observer commented ; ‘ I defy any lover of an old-fashioned English garden to see these drawings without real delight.There is a level, a repose,almost a fragrance about each and all of them’ .Owners of some of England’s finest gardens commissioned her.One of whom was Lady Ludlow who commissioned her to paint the gardens of Luton Hoo. ‘ A Border at K...
