An Art Furniture Ebonised Cabinet Attributed To Collinson & Lock, London 1870s
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Jeckyll & Co
A very stylish and sophisticated example of cabinet-making and design from one of the best London makers of the period.
The cabinet is not stamped, however I am aware of other closely related examples made by he firm. The design is progressive and avant-garde, with a rather radical monochrome palette chosen in favour of softer, more conventional painted and gilt decoration. The detail of the carving is crisp and the drawers are mahogany-lined.
Interestingly the cabinet exhibits several elements from E.W. Godwin''s repertoire including the foliate gilt-embossed paper; the circular cut-outs and the pierced flowerheads. Furthermore the date of the cabinet coincides with a period c.1872-1875, when Godwin provided a series of furniture designs for the firm.
Please let me know if you have any questions or require additinal images.
Reliable transport throughout the UK can be easily arranged at cost price. I am always happy to obtain a no-obligation quote.
