Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Vernis Martin refers to a specialised lacquering technique developed in 18th-century France by the Martin brothers, which was later revived in the 19th century to decorate furniture such as cylinder top writing desks. A cylinder desk features a curved, retractable wooden section that rolls back to reveal inner drawers and writing surfaces.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or kingwood, embellished with painted lacquer panels, mirrored glass, and gilt-bronze or brass mounts. The internal mechanisms feature precision joinery to allow the rolling cylinder mechanism to operate smoothly.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-painted pastoral or romantic scenes with subtle craquelure in the varnish layer alongside cast-bronze or brass mounts. Construction indicators include hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original locking mechanisms, and timber oxidisation consistent with age.

Position the desk as a focal architectural feature against a neutral wall, allowing its painted panels and metal details to stand out. Complement the warm mahogany tones with minimalist modern lighting or place it near tailored upholstered seating to balance decorative historical elements.

Dust the surface regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent lacquer cracking or wood warping. Avoid using abrasive chemical cleaners or water on painted lacquer panels and gilded mounts.
