Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this stunning suite of eight Louis XVI style circa 1860-1880 dining chairs from Spencer House which was built for the Spencer family between 1756-1766 for John, the first Earl Spencer, currently resides Charles Spencer the 9th Earl Spencer

I have various pieces from the last Spencer house sale, which is still owned by Lady Diana Spencer’s family, the history of the items is that Lord Rothschild in the 1980’s leased the property, at that time the house was restored, the pieces furnished the offices, meeting rooms and the newly restored State rooms. Included with each listing is a picture of the piece in situs

These chairs are made in the Louis XVI style, they are Napoleon III, the frames have all the original gilding which has beautifully aged and worn throughout to reveal the base plaster beneath which has a purplish tinge to it. The upholstery has been professionally cleaned, it has some light patina marks here and there, it is the 100% correct type of fabric for this period chair

The Louis XVI style emerged during the late 18th century as a Neoclassical reaction against the ornate curves of Rococo. Seating from this era is characterised by geometric symmetry, straight tapered legs with vertical fluting, carved rosettes at the joinery, and oval or padded rectangular backs.

Authentic period pieces were constructed using solid carved woods such as beechwood or walnut, often finished with gold leaf gilding or distressed paint. Seats were structured with natural webbing, horsehair padding, and hand-bound springs covered in silk, damask, or velvet upholstery.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved joinery details, square pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, and subtle irregularities in the gilding or turnings. Later 19th and 20th-century reproductions often feature machine-cut elements, uniform gesso underlayers, and modern upholstery fasteners.

Giltwood Louis XVI chairs can be paired with modern dark wood or contemporary glass dining tables to create an eclectic contrast. Placing them around a neutral setting allows their gilded frames and structured Neoclassical silhouettes to serve as focal points.

Gilded finishes should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding water, solvents, or household polish which dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Keep the chairs away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent the wood from cracking or the gilding from flaking.
