Kurdish Rug, West Persia, Circa 1870, 1.95m X 0.73m (76" X 29")

19th century
Description

The wool quality and weave suggest this rug was produced the Sauj Bulagh Kurds in Western Persia in the second half of the 19th century. The design of repeating shrubs is also associated with this group. However, the format is quite unusual, and has resulted in a very attractive and decorative short runner with a narrow width. The colours are subtle and harmonious. I particularly like the combination of blue and gold. Note also the appearance of a lovely aubergine which suggests a production date no later than around 1870. Generally good condition. One small repair to a corner. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kurdish rugs from West Persia are hand-knotted tribal textiles crafted by Kurdish weavers, known for their durable wool foundations, saturated natural dyes, and geometric or stylized botanical motifs.

These runners were constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation, knotted using symmetrical or asymmetrical knots, and dyed with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature subtle abrash colour variations from small-batch natural dyeing, soft hand-spun wool, slight weaver asymmetries, and traditional geometric field patterns.

Long, narrow tribal runners are positioned in entry hallways, corridors, or along sideboards to add visual depth, historical texture, and deep tones to modern floor surfaces.

Preservation requires regular low-suction vacuuming without a beater bar, placement of a supportive rug pad underneath, immediate spot-cleaning of spills, and periodic professional specialist washing.
