Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large and unusual Meiji Period 1868-1912, Natsume (tea caddy), the pure silver square form caddy is predominately decorated with four gilt rimmed panels each filled with native fruits and vegetables formed from mixed alloys including gold, silver, shakudo and shibuichi, the panels housed within a hand textured silver body, upon each corner of the caddy you will see a sumptuous mixed metal butterfly facing the snug fitting airtight lid that has been delicately worked with a vibrant cloisonne enamel butterfly. The underside is inset with a gilt signature seal that translates to read Masaharu alongside a punched silver import mark, probably French . A fascinating, unusual and highly decorative mixed media vessel that would sit well in any Japanese metalwork or tea caddy collection.
