An Unusual William and Mary Period Figured Walnut Escritoire

18th century
Description

The very unusual bonnet shaped cornice having cross-grain mouldings above two frieze drawers. The cross banded and feather banded fall having box wood line inlay and etched brass escutcheon. The fall opens to reveal an arrangement of 15 figured walnut drawers with feather banding, original brass drop handles, a pigeon hole and a central cupboard which opens to 3 secret drawers behind a walnut slide. The fall interior having wide walnut cross banding, antique green leather tooled writing surface and iron support hinges. The lower section having cross-grain mouldings above 3 feather banded wide drawers and the whole standing on a cross-grain and cross banded moulding with later turned bun feet. Condition- Overall very good with book matched veneers, feather banding and oak linings throughout. The outside etched brass handles and escutcheons are later replacements, the locks are all present and have keys. Dimensions:- Max.Height…77’’/ 195.5cm. Width…40.25’’/ 102cm. Depth…20’’/ 51cm.
