Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In nineteenth-century Britain, claret jugs were designed specifically to serve red wine imported from the Bordeaux region of France. These vessels served as functional status symbols in Victorian dining rooms and were frequently customized as presentation gifts to commemorate personal or civic achievements.

Victorian claret jugs were predominantly crafted from solid sterling silver, electroplated silver, or cut crystal mounted with silver handles and spouts. Construction techniques included hand-chasing, surface engraving, casting, and repousse metalwork.

Authentic British silver pieces display official hallmarks indicating silver purity, makers marks, city assay marks, and specific date letters. Presentation pieces also feature crisp, period-accurate engraved typography and period construction methods such as hand-drawn hinges.

A silver claret jug functions as a refined accent when displayed on a dining room sideboard, drinks trolley, or mantelpiece. Placing silver tableware alongside dark polished timber, stone surfaces, or modern glassware creates visual contrast in contemporary or traditional spaces.

Maintain silver hollowware by polishing periodically with a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to remove natural oxidisation. Avoid harsh chemical dips, store in low-humidity environments, and dry thoroughly if washed in warm water.
