Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bonheur du jour is a specialised type of French ladies writing desk that emerged in Paris during the mid-18th century. It typically features a flat writing surface backed by a small raised cabinet, drawers, or cubbies, designed specifically for writing personal correspondence.

Craftsmen typically constructed these pieces using figure-grained hardwoods such as walnut, kingwood, or rosewood veneers over an oak frame. Decorative elements frequently incorporate cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and hand-painted porcelain plaques depicting figurative scenes or floral garlands.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer linings, heavy cast ormolu with hand-chased details, and natural oxidisation on underside timber elements. The porcelain plaques often feature overglaze painting and gilded surrounds affixed with brass retainers.

Place the piece as a focal accent against a neutral backdrop in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway. Pair it with minimalist lighting or a modern upholstered chair to create a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Clean the wood surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally, avoiding water or harsh chemicals. Ormolu mounts should be dusted gently without abrasive polishes to preserve the original gilding, while porcelain plaques require only a light wiping with a dry soft cloth.
