Wonderful mother of pearl inlay highlights the rising sun and lakeside, together with hand painted painted swallows and waterlilies on this exceptional set of Victorian tolewear trays. This scene, with Japanese influence, is surrounded by a gilded rolled rim. The condition is good.

Toleware refers to decorative painted tinplate or metalware, often finished with dark japanned lacquer to emulate East Asian lacquer techniques popular throughout Western Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These pieces were crafted from rolled sheet metal or compressed papier-mache, coated with layers of dark asphaltum varnish or lacquer, and embellished with hand-painted gilding and inlaid mother-of-pearl shell.

Authentic period trays show fine craquelure in the varnish, light wear on the gilded rims, hand-applied painted details rather than printed patterns, and hand-fitted shell inlays.
