Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror, or pier glass, is a tall, narrow mirror originally designed to be placed on the pierthe wall space located between two windows. Popular from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, these mirrors served both decorative purposes and functional roles by reflecting light into darker areas of formal reception rooms.

Gilt pier mirrors typically feature hand-carved wood or moulded gilded composition frameworks coated in gold leaf over a gesso ground. Verre eglomise refers to a specific decorative technique where gold or silver leaf is applied to the reverse side of glass and etched with intricate patterns or designs.

Authentic nineteenth-century mirrors generally feature timber backboards with signs of natural oxidation and age-appropriate wear to the gilding, such as red or grey bole showing beneath worn gold leaf. Mercury or early silvered mirror plates often show gentle foxing, and reverse-gilded glass panels display natural patina rather than modern screen-printed detail.

In modern interior schemes, a tall pier mirror can be positioned on a narrow accent wall, hung above a console table, or placed opposite a window to draw light deeper into the room. Combining the gilded finish and historic patina with contemporary furniture creates an effective textural contrast.

Clean water-gilded or oil-gilded frames using only a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry feather duster, avoiding liquid solvents or abrasives which strip gold leaf. Mirror glass and eglomise sections should be cleaned carefully with damp cotton pads, ensuring moisture does not seep behind the glass trim.
