A fine and tender late 17th century portrait oil a boy holding a rose, by an artist in the circle of Sir Peter Lely.
 
The attractive blue eyed sitter is depicted half length within an oval cartouche, he stands against rock work and foliage and gazes at the viewer with the most sensitive of expressions. His youth and beauty are empathised by his radiant skin, bright eyes, full lips and auburn hair which tumbles naturalistically around his shoulders.
 
In one hand he tenderly holds a rose as if he might be about to prefer it to the viewer, the rose of course has long been a symbol of love, beauty sensitivity and mysticism.
 
Of particular note in the portrait are the free hand and bravura brush strokes of a confident artist, who was able to tackle, costume, drapery and lacework all with aparent ease.
 
This evocative work is offered in an excellent state of conservation and is ready to hang and enjoy in a 17th hand carved and silvered Lely style frame with its original finish, which...
