Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1950s.
The outer case is inscribed on one side “Presented to Brigadier W.B. Radford, MBE, MC, RA by Brigadier General Chatichai Choonhavan Commandant of the Armored School. Royal Thai Army”.
Some research into the names reveals that Brigadier General Chatichai Choonhavan (1922-1998) had a significant and successful background in the military leading to a life in politics later becoming Prime Minister of Thailand between 1988-1991.
Inside, the case is engine turned with swirls, and has two wires to contain cigarettes. The piece is hallmarked ‘Sterling Silver’; ‘Sterling Thailand’, ‘Thaina Com’ and ‘Hill Shenstone”.
