Early 20th Century Portman Armchair

1920 - 1940
Description

An early 20th century armchair by Portman Upholstery. Having beautiful shaped sides like those of a Howard & Sons Bridgewater armchair. Having a sprung seat with original horse hair, down feather filled back and seat cushions, offering ultimate comfort. The whole raised on upholstered tapered legs with brass castors. Newly recovered in our exclusive PU monogramed ticking which we have made and copied from its original cover.

Height: 75.5 cm - 29 3/4 Inches, Width: 73.5 cm - 29 Inches, Depth: 91.5 cm - 36 Inches

Very little is known about the Portman Upholstery Company other than the superior quality, materials and comfort they offer is only to be rivalled by Howard & Sons.  Both companies were in central London W1.  It is believed they traded from the 1930’s to 1960’s.  Pieces can often be seen in important country houses and stately homes.  A pair of sofas reside in Dustmaston Hall, Shropshire (National Trust).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
