Barges on a French Canal, Ca 1940 Mid Century River Landscape Oil on Canvas

Description

A beautiful water landscape with clear, sensitive, and harmonious

nuances of colour. The barges are typically French - compare them to

those in Sisley's "Barges at Billancourt" - and the painting is

certainly French in origin.

Dating from the 1940s and unsigned, it has been suggested that it may

be an early work by Jacques Bouyssou, a French expressionist artist

born in 1926 near Honfleur in Normandy. Bouyssou studied architecture

at the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Troyes, and drawing with the sculptor

Janin. When he moved to Paris to study at the Academie de la Grand

Chaumiere in the studio of Othon-Friesz, he discovered his love for

painting. He was tutored by Friesz, and quickly became a master of

beach and port scenes of Normandy.

Measuring 38 x 46 cm for the canvas, the overall framed size of the

artwork is 49 x 57 cm.
