Fine early C19th Regency period “Old Sheffield plate” wine-cooler by Matthew Boulton & Co .

Campana-shaped wine-cooler crisply cast with a deep band of classical anthemion decoration around the body . Raised on a leaf-cast circular socle base . Acanthus leaf wrapped handles with grape and vine-leaf cast detail where they join the body.

The body engraved to each side with finely detailed and skilfully-executed noble armorial crest .

The underside bearing the punched star or sunflower marks of Matthew Boulton & Co.

Fitted with a removable rim and inner sleeve liner for ice .

Matthew Boulton & Co , of Soho House Manufactory , Birmingham , were leading and highly-esteemed producers of fine quality silver-plated wares of this type, using a technique of fused copper and silver sheets first developed in Sheffield during the C18th .

In excellent original condition with only minor wear to one small area of the silver plate on the top edge .

Old Sheffield plate was developed in the mid-eighteenth century and continued into the Regency era, created by fusing a thick sheet of sterling silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets. Items from the Regency period often showcase classical proportions, gadrooned borders, intricate coat of arms engravings, and ornate foliate handles.

These vessels were formed using fused silver-and-copper sheets, shaped by hand hammering and spinning over wooden formers. Decorative elements such as rim borders, feet, and handles were typically die-struck or cast in sterling silver or silver-plated metal and soldered into place.

Authentic Matthew Boulton pieces often feature the makers mark, such as the double sun or star mark stamped into the metal, along with a distinct weight from the copper core beneath. Traces of copper exposed through normal surface wear, known as bleeding, also confirm the fused plate construction rather than electroplating.
