Serabend Rug with Botehs, Persia, Circa 1900, 2.32m X 1.25m

1900 - 1920
Description

Dating to around 1900, this rare piece is a genuine Serabend rug from Western Persia, a group characterised by small repeating botehs. This piece has a soft terracotta field with the ubiquitous offset rows of botehs, and is framed by a classic ivory meandering vine and boteh border. This is the prototype for many other rugs copied around Persia and other weaving centres. Nice soft velvety wool. Good pile with only a few old minor restorations. Professionally cleaned. Subtle and harmonious, it would make a lovely decorative rug suitable for many settings.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the Arak region in central Persia, Serabend rugs are distinguished by their signature field design featuring repeating rows of small boteh motifs. The boteh, an ancient symbol representing a flame, leaf, or pine cone, is typically aligned in alternating directions across a field of red or terracotta.

Serabend rugs are hand-knotted using wool pile woven onto a cotton warp and weft foundation. Artisans historically employed natural vegetable dyes to create deep terracotta, navy, and cream tones, utilising asymmetrical or symmetrical knotting techniques depending on the specific weaving village.

Authentic rugs from this era feature subtle variations in colour known as abrash, caused by hand-dyed wool batches, as well as natural age-related wear to the pile and selvedges. A flexible handle, irregular hand-knotted reverse pattern, and natural dye mellowing distinguish genuine pieces from modern synthetic reproductions.

A Serabend rug provides colour grounding in contemporary spaces when paired with neutral upholstery and natural timber furniture. The repeating geometric boteh motif complements both traditional period rooms and modern, eclectic interior schemes.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar removes surface dirt, while periodic rotation prevents uneven foot traffic and light exposure. Professional specialist cleaning with water and pH-neutral solutions is recommended every few years to preserve natural wool fibres.
