This is an antique gimballed compass. An English, brass and glass decorative scientific instrument for display, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1880.

Fascinating decorative miner's compass, replete with carry case

Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order — function untested

Quality brass case presents minimal weathering and subdued golden tones

Clear, bright glass dial in very good order, free of marks or loss

Set upon a gimbal, with locking mechanism to the base

Lift-up azimuth with articulated demi-lune degree marker

Serial number engraved to the base '457' matching repair label within the case

Maker's label to the mahogany case for J. Casartelli & Son, Salford, Manchester

This is a charming antique gimballed compass, perfect for display. Well suited to the desk of those with an engineering interest or collector of Victorian instruments. Delivered polished and ready to enjoy.
