Antique Gabbeh, Qashqa'i Tribes, Fars Province, South-west Persia.

1900 - 1920
Description

I love the bold depiction of large diamond-shape lozenges in this spectacular little Gabbeh, made by the Kashkuli taifeh of the Qashqa'i Confederacy circa 1900.

Gabbehs from this period, in this full-pile condition, are rare. Not only that, but the small size is extremely unusual. The soft, lustrous, saturated natural-dye wool quality too is fabulous.

During the 19th century, gabbehs were made quickly on ground looms and often quite coarsely knotted. Their purpose was purely as everyday floor coverings in the black tents, with the finer more intricately knotted rugs kept aside for special occasions. Thus gabbehs were heavily used and when worn out, simply discarded!

Today, few 19th century gabbehs like this one survived and have thus become very collectable.

Size: 1.40m x 1.04m (4' 7" x 3' 5").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
