Stunning Large 19th Century Bronze Sculpture by Albert Carrier- Belleuse ' La Fileuse '

19th century
Description

A stunning 19th century bronze sculpture of a young woman, titled 'La Fileuse' (The Spinner) She is dressed in Renaissance costume with her dress embroidered with fleur-de-lis. She is holding a distaff in the left hand, from which she pulls the thread with her right hand. She stands on a revolving base.

This beautiful sculpture is signed in the bronze 'A - CARRIER-BELLEUSE' and with the Societe des Bronze de Paris foundry. It is in very good condition, beautiful detail and with a lovely rich patination.

Albert Ernest Carrier- Belleuse 12th June 1824 - 4th June 1887 was a French sculptor. He was one of the founding members of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and was made an officer of the Legion of Honour.

He trained as a goldsmith's apprentice and was a student of David d' Angers. His name is perhaps best known because Auguste Rodin was his assistant between 1864 -1870. He worked in England between 1850 - 1855.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French bronzes are defined by exceptional casting technique, high attention to surface chasing, and sophisticated patination methods developed during the Second Empire and Third Republic eras. Leading sculptors of this period often produced work in the Academic Realism style, blending Renaissance revival themes with high classical craftsmanship.

These sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax or sand-casting methods, after which skilled artisans hand-chased the metal to refine details like fabric textures and facial features. The final rich colouration was achieved through chemical patination, applying heat and oxides to produce dark brown, golden, or verdant tones.

Authentic period bronzes generally feature sharp, crisp casting detail around hand-finished elements such as hair and drapery, alongside a crisp incised signature. Inspecting the underside reveals age-appropriate hand-tooling or foundry marks, and the patina should display natural tonal variations from handling rather than uniform modern spray coatings.

Positioning a bronze sculpture on a marble-topped sideboard, mantelpiece, or plinth creates an elevated focal point. Juxtaposing dark bronze surfaces against light modern plaster walls or alongside contemporary linear furniture highlights the classical geometry and sculptural form.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth to prevent dirt buildup in carved crevices. To protect the original chemical patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently, avoiding liquid chemical cleaners or abrasives.
