19thc French Silver Sifter Spoon Paris 1819-38

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A beautiful early 19thC French silver sifter spoon with a clear standard hallmark for Paris 1819-1838 (a head of Hippocrates, beard, facing right) a makers mark (diamond shape), and a hallmark for the guarantee (a crowned head facing left). As there are three hallmarks, the item can be dated to before 1838. The hallmarks appear on the back of the handle, where the one time owners initials R B are also inscribed in a typical early 19thC script. French silver of this period has a silver content of .950. The spoon is substantial for a sifter spoon and weighs 80gr. The sifter is pierced, elaborate and handsome with a scalloped wavy edge and central inner rosette. A really lovely and rather rare piece.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver sifter spoons, or sugar sifters, were designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to sprinkle caster sugar over fresh fruit and desserts. They were produced as part of larger dessert services in wealthy European households, with Paris being a notable centre of manufacture.

Nineteenth-century French sifters were made from high-grade silver, typically meeting the French official standard of 950 or 800 parts per thousand. The bowl perforations were created using hand-piercing techniques or specialized punches to form intricate lattice or scrolling patterns.

French silver produced between 1819 and 1838 features distinct official hallmarks, including the Old Womans Head (Vieillard) mark for Paris or regional departments, alongside a silversmiths makers mark enclosed in a lozenge-shaped cartouche.

Antique flatware can be displayed in glass-fronted cabinets, placed in small presentation trays on a dining sideboard, or incorporated into contemporary table settings alongside modern tableware for contrast.

Silver should be washed gently in warm water with mild soap and dried immediately with a soft lint-free cloth. To remove oxidisation without damaging delicate hand-pierced detailing, apply a non-abrasive silver cream using a soft brush or microfibre cloth.
