Description

A William and Mary Gilt-Japanned Chinoiserie cabinet on gilt wood stand. The cabinet depicting Court and rural scenes, with pierced and engraved strapwork mounts and elaborate escutcheon plate with original lock and key. The interior fitted with ten drawers, depicting Court scenes, in overall very good condition, with refreshing to the lacquer, but signs of careful restoration. The interior displaying the original vibrancy of certain pigments. The renaissance carved gilt wood stand is probably Dutch, or Dutch inspired, showing later restoration to gilding, with the underside having iron strapwork supports.

Originating in the late seventeenth century, these cabinets featured European decorative lacquerwork known as japanning, which imitated East Asian Chinoiserie motifs.
