Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late seventeenth century, these cabinets featured European decorative lacquerwork known as japanning, which imitated East Asian Chinoiserie motifs. They were traditionally raised on elaborate carved and gilded wooden stands to protect the delicate lacquer panels and highlight their decorative craftsmanship.

These pieces typically feature softwoods or oak panels coated with layers of resin varnish and pigments to create a dark japanned surface. The decorative motifs were highlighted with gesso, gold leaf, or bronzing powder, while the supporting stands were carved from lime wood or pine and finished in water gilding with heavy brass lockplates and hinges.

Authentic William and Mary period cabinets display hand-drawn dovetail joints, oak or pine drawer linings, and hand-chased brass mounts with original pin fixings. The lacquered surfaces often show age-related craquelure, while the giltwood stands exhibit genuine wear to the high points of the carving and natural oxidisation.

Positioning a Chinoiserie cabinet as a focal point against a neutral or rich wall creates a striking contrast between historical artistry and contemporary minimalism. It functions effectively in a formal drawing room, entrance hall, or dining area where its intricate giltwork and dark lacquer can be highlighted by ambient lighting.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity to prevent the wood from warping and the lacquer from cracking. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding water, commercial polishes, and solvents that can compromise the delicate gilded leaf and varnish layers.
