Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A helmet coal scuttle is a traditional fireside container shaped similarly to an inverted military helmet, designed with a wide flared lip to make scooping or pouring coal directly into a fireplace easier. Popularised during the 19th century, these vessels served as both functional fuel stores and decorative hearth adornments in Victorian households.

Victorian coal scuttles were typically hand-crafted from sheet brass or copper, often featuring hand-hammered repousse textures to add structural strength and visual detail. Component parts, such as the curved overhead swing handle, rear lifting loop, and circular pedestal base, were joined using solid metal rivets or brazed seams.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually exhibit signs of hand construction, including hand-set copper or brass rivets, uneven hammer marks, and minor asymmetry in the metalwork. Authentic items also demonstrate natural surface patination or oxidisation within crevices, alongside noticeable wear on the underside of the base where it rested on hearth surfaces.

In modern living spaces, a Victorian brass scuttle can be positioned beside a fireplace or wood-burning stove to store kindling, dried logs, or fire lighters. Alternatively, it can be repurposed as an accent planter for indoor greenery or placed in a hallway as a unique umbrella and stick holder.

To preserve the finish, dust the brass regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. If a bright shine is desired, apply a non-abrasive metal polish sparingly, though leaving the natural aged patina intact is often preferred to maintain historical character and surface integrity.
