Early Victorian Painted Truncheon C1840

19th century
Description

An early Victorian turned fruitwood or boxwood truncheon with painted royal insignia surrounded by the words Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense. The truncheon has a turned green and leather wrist strap. The numbers 78 and 102 and initial S are incised into the truncheon just below the grasp. The painted royal insignia occupies the central part of the truncheon with deep blu, red and gold paint. There is wear so the paint has worn in places but the quarter shields are clear. It is likely that the tip of truncheon would have been painted with the initials of the reigning monarch but this truncheon has seen life and been used. Still, the wooden object is in beautiful condition and the signs of wear only prove age.
