Late Regency Reclining Buttoned Leather Armchair

19th century
Description

Very stylish late Regency recline armchair in rosewood and buttoned leather, circa 1830 and in lovely condition.

With the armchair in its upright position it is very much a chair that one would sit in all evening, even more so if you were to recline it to the position required. The reclining pin is at the side of the seat cushion and the mechanism runs well.

The leather has a great look to it, gently worn with age and has been fed and waxed to give it a wonderful mellow glow.

Great chair to use daily, or to have as a free standing additional seating when required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Regency reclining armchairs typically feature adjustable ratchet mechanisms allowing the backrest to tilt, combined with rich timber frames such as mahogany or rosewood. They incorporate classical carving details, scroll arms, turned legs, and buttoned leather upholstery.

Pieces from this era were constructed using solid mahogany or rosewood frames, fitted with brass mechanisms, castors, and studding. Upholstery traditionally utilised close-studded, deep-buttoned natural leather over hand-tied coil springs and horsehair stuffing.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery, original brass hardware with age-appropriate patination, and hand-cut ratchet tracks for the reclining action. The timber often shows rich grain patterns and natural wear around handrests and leg turnings.

Position the armchair in a study, reading nook, or living space alongside a minimal side table and ambient floor lighting. The warm tan leather and dark timber contrast effectively against textured neutral walls or deep heritage paint shades.

Apply a specialist leather conditioner periodically to prevent cracking, keeping the hide hydrated without darkening the finish. Clean timber frames with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly, avoiding direct heat sources and sunlight.
