Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bar brooches reached peak popularity during the Edwardian and Art Deco eras of the early 20th century. Characterised by clean linear geometry, these brooches were designed to complement the streamlined fashion silhouettes of the 1920s.

Brooches from this era were predominantly crafted in 18ct gold, white gold, or platinum to provide strength for fine settings. Diamonds and coloured gemstones were set using millegrain bezels and grain settings.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-cut diamonds, such as Old European or single cuts, alongside delicate hand-applied millegrain edging. Look for period gold or platinum hallmarks and traditional pin closures on the reverse.

A bar brooch can be worn horizontally on a suit lapel, fastened centrally at the collar of a buttoned shirt, or attached to a silk scarf or winter coat for a subtle accent.

Clean gently using warm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush around the diamond settings. Store the piece individually in a lined box to prevent scratching, and have the catch inspected regularly by a jeweller.
