Late C19th / early C20th Queen Anne period revival black lacquer decorated torchere .

Smart lacquered torchere in the early C18th Queen Anne period style . Raised on a tripod base with shaped inverted legs and scroll feet , a swollen turned vase pillar column fitted with a circular top having a turned raised rim edge .

The lacquer work decorated in the traditional style with floral sprigs , flower-heads and feathers in red and gold .

In excellent original condition with only minor wear to surface and decoration.

A smart copy of an important and rare Queen Anne period torchere , candle or flower-stand .

FAQs

Originally developed in seventeenth-century France, a torchere is a tall, narrow stand designed to elevate candleholders, oil lamps, or braziers above head level to illuminate a room. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, revival styles adapted these forms into decorative accent pedestals for displaying plants, sculpture, or ceramics.

Japanned torcheres were typically crafted from hardwoods such as beech or pine, which were built up with multiple layers of dark lacquer or oil-based varnish to mimic East Asian lacquer. Hand-painted decoration using metallic powders, gold leaf, and mineral pigments was then applied to create floral or Chinoiserie scenes.

Authentic late nineteenth and early twentieth-century revival pieces display hand-painted detailing rather than modern printed transfers. Inspection of the underside usually reveals natural wood grain, turned column construction joints, and fine crazing or micro-cracking in the lacquer varnish consistent with natural aging.

A black lacquer torchere functions well in unused alcoves, corners, or alongside low seating as a plant stand or display pedestal. Its dark finish and gilded detailing contrast effectively against contemporary neutral walls, adding height and visual structure to a room layout.
