A Fine Pair of Art Deco Silver Toast Racks

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Lantern Antiques
Description

This is a delightful pair of silver toast racks, made by Deakin and Francis, and assayed in Birmingham in 1934. With shield-shaped handles, these are beautifully proportioned, having Art Deco motifs in the centre of all four stretchers. They are raised on pretty little splayed feet. Of excellent quality, these are made from a good gauge silver and weigh just under 120 grams. Both carry identical hallmarks, which are crisp and clear. In my opinion they have had little or no use and, with absolutely no damage or repairs, they are in excellent antique condition. [Please note that there are some reflections in the photographs.]

Length: 6.6 cm (2.6 inches)

Width: 5.3 cm (2.1 inches)

Height: 6.6 cm (2.6 inches)

Total Weight: 118 grams.

Declaration

Lantern Antiques has dated these Art Deco Silver Toast Racks to the 1930s.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco silverware from the 1920s and 1930s is defined by geometric symmetry, clean lines, and streamlined forms, moving away from ornate Victorian decoration toward functional modernism.

Toast racks were primarily crafted from solid sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), or silver plate, utilizing wirework construction or cast frames with looped handles.

Authentic pieces display period hallmarks or maker marks indicating purity and date of manufacture, alongside characteristic stylized geometric handles and angular or stepped feet.

Beyond breakfast dining, silver toast racks are frequently repurposed in contemporary settings as letter trays, stationery holders on an office desk, or display racks for napkins.

Silverware should be washed gently in warm soapy water, dried thoroughly with a soft lint-free cloth, and periodically polished using a specialized silver cream to prevent oxidisation.
