Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Penwork is a decorative technique that gained immense popularity in Britain during the Regency period, roughly between 1810 and 1830. It involves painting or lacquering a wooden object black or dark brown, drawing intricate patterns or scenes using fine India ink pens, and often adding translucent painted details before applying a protective protective varnish.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from light-toned hardwoods such as sycamore or holly, which provided a smooth surface for ink application. Outer surfaces were blackened with japan lacquer, while decorative metal fittings, such as cast gilt brass paw feet and side ring handles, were added for structural support and ornament.

Authentic Regency pieces show age-appropriate wear, such as fine craquelure in the varnish layer, mild oxidisation to the gilt brass fittings, and hand-worked joinery inside the box structure. Furthermore, genuine period penwork displays hand-drawn ink lines that vary slightly in thickness, rather than the uniform lines seen on modern printed reproductions.

An antique penwork box serves as a functional decorative accent when placed on a sideboard, bedside table, or coffee table tray. Pairing dark lacquered surfaces with light contemporary marble, linen, or neutral backdrop colours highlights the detailed painted floral artwork.

Keep the box away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent warping of the wood or flaking of the paint. Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and avoid applying commercial chemical polishes or water, which can dissolve historical lacquers and ink.
