A George Grove Candle Stick Circa 1750

18th century
Description

George grove is recorded as having been active as a "candle stick maker" between 1748 and 1768 in the birmingham area. He specialised in four designs and the stick construction was a seamed and brazed form. Knopped stem and typical petal base.

This classic 7.5 inch brass stick is stamped with grove's mark and was made during the reign of george II circa 1750. (272 years ago). Through history silver sticks were treasured and often stored and hidden as items of high value. Brass sticks were far more common but not in the ownership of the less well off. Several makers majored in their production, george grove is perhaps one of the leading makers of this type of product. Early brass sticks are far less common than their silver counterparts because they were valued less and often were scrapped, re-worked and melted as fashion and material needs changed.

This handsome stick is in excellent straight condition with polished finish commensurate with it's age. A pair of these sticks would be offered by a specialist dealer for two thousand pounds upwards, a single carries a lower relative value and price but if you have, or can find a partner for this stick it's value rises very sharply!

All questions welcome and more pictures available on request.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
