Notes: August Rieper (1865 – 1940) a German, interior, portrait and nude painter.
Rieper received his first drawing lessons in Hamburg at the vocational school. In 1884 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, his pictures exhibited in 1887 met with great interest among established Munich artists, such as Lenbach, Kaulbach, Seitz and others. Especially with Kaulbach and Seitz, Rieper came into a friendly, student-like relationship. In 1888 he was represented at the International Exhibition in the Munich Glass Palace.
Rieper was a long-standing member of the State Commission for Restoration Affairs at the Bavarian State Gallery. As a member of the Munich Artists'' Cooperative, he received a special exhibition in the old National Museum in 1928.
Rieper initially limited his artistic work to still life, figurative representations can only be found sporadically in his first creative years. From
...the 1890s, he began to combine still life and figure motifs into larger-scale compositions. At the beginning of the 20th century, he increasingly specialized in the depiction of figures in interiors, including numerous nudes, first in the interior, then more and more composed into landscapes (e.g. The Temptation).
