A Remarkable George Ii /george III Engraved Brass Shovel By David Robertson, King's Smith, Edinburgh 1760's

The shovel is made by David Robertson, (a cousin of Robert Adam), who began his apprenticeship as a whitesmith in the Canongate, under George Old in 1734. Some decades later, in 1772 he was appointed Master Smith of the Mint in Edinburgh and known as the King''s Smith.
 
Robertson was commissioned by the Marquis of Bute to provide several grates and sets of fire tools for Dumfries House in 1760. This shovel is directly related to the grandest set, originally intended for the Hall.
